How to Set Spiritual Boundaries
When Spirit Knocks at 2 A.M.
It’s 2 a.m., and I’ve leapt out of bed— Spirit is calling, and I’ve got a message.
It’s not unusual for Spirit to “ring me” in the early mornings so it can deliver information to me. In fact, it’s one of the most frequent times I get psychic hits because my house is quiet, my body is rested, and I’m not distracted by my children. Spirit also has my permission to wake me up.
Usually once I’m awake I tune into my intuition, and the messages swirling around my heart, jot down what I need to remember in the Notes app on my phone, and pass back out.
However, when I went to Lily Dale last summer and stayed with a famous Louisiana medium, he told me his guides weren’t allowed in his bedroom at night—that was his private place away from Spirit.
This information didn’t surprise me, because it’s up to us to set up our spiritual boundaries once we’ve opened up our intuitive gifts.
It’s very hard for me, as a mom of two little kids, to channel in the afternoons once school lets out— which is why in the evenings Spirit is welcome to give me information through my dreams or by waking me. However, I understand the need to set boundaries if you are someone who gets information throughout the day.
Whenever I lead workshops or intuitive classes, one of the first things we talk about is our spiritual “rules”. How do you want Spirit showing up in your life?
Your relationship with your intuition is yours to curate to your life however it feels right. You’re the authority of your experience, and your personal and human needs are just as important as the information you receive.
You can set up your spiritual boundaries by asking yourself and answering the following questions:
What is your “open” sign for Spirit? When can your guides come to you with messages or information? Does a candle need to be lit? Is it during your morning journaling session?
Having a dedicated time or “office hours” to connect with your higher self or Spirit is the best way to welcome in messages, that way Spirit knows when it can get a hold of you and you aren’t receiving channels randomly throughout the day (unless that’s your preference).What is your “closed” sign for your intuition? The same way we have an open sign, we need to have a closed sign— when are you absolutely unavailable? When you are sleeping? With your kids? With your partner? State when and where you won’t be receiving information.
Is there any information you don’t want to receive? If you don’t want to know about death, breakups, or talk to dead people add this to your list! Spirit will honor and respect what you don’t want to receive.
Make a “gimme” list of things you ABSOLUTELY want information about— whether that be about your finances, relationships, or nudges through life tell Spirit what information you WANT to receive in abundance to make your inuition stronger.
Create an Opening Mantra about who you want to receive information from. I always start my meditation with “I am only channeling beings and receiving messages for my best and highest good, grounded in love that are here to help elevate my spiritual consciousness.”
This line I say anytime I’m pulling tarot, doing a mediumship reading, or channeling/writing with Spirit. There are lots of beings and entities in the Universe and we MUST state where we want the information to come from to protect our energy (I wish this mantra was super imposed on an Ouija board!)
This is a great start for your spiritual boundaries, but they should evolve as you do. Write these down in your notebook or on your phone to document them, and revisit them whenever you need to.
